The whole world had its eyes on Korea during the 21st inter-Korean family reunion last week amid continued efforts towards denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula. The separated families had to wait 70 long years, but another farewell soon followed.
Until now, the reunions have been on and off depending on the political situation of the two Koreas at the time. Accordingly, there have been criticisms that the events were used as mere tools to achieve certain political agendas.
On this week's [The Point: World Affairs], we sit down with Joanna Hosaniak, the Deputy Director General of Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights to talk about the significance of their reunions and the tasks to be addressed ahead. Also, we connect with Professor Michael Wolffsohn from the Munich University of the Federal Armed Forces to examine Germany's case of handling separated families and how this eventually affected their reunification.

해빙기에 접어든 남북관계와 이에 비해 교착상태에 빠진 북미 비핵화 협상 등 세계의 이목이 한반도에 집중된 가운데 펼쳐진 21차 남북이산가족 상봉 행사에 한국뿐만 아니라 외신들의 관심도 높았다. 70년 가까이 서로를 그리워하다가 만난 고령의 이산가족들의 상봉, 그리고 또 한 번의 이별 모습에 많은 사람들이 가슴 아팠는데!
그동안 이산가족 상봉 행사는 남북관계의 상황에 따라 재개와 중지를 반복해 왔다. 이에 따라, 상봉 행사가 정치적 성과나 업적을 강조하기 위한 '보여주기 식 이벤트'라는 비판 역시 지속돼 왔다. 제한된 인원이 1회성 만남만을 가질 수밖에 없는 상황은 점차 고령이 돼가는 이산가족의 마음을 더욱 멍들게 하는데!
[The Point: World Affair]에서는 요안나 호사냑 북한인권시민연합 부국장이 출연해 이번 이산가족상봉의 의미와 향후 풀어나가야 할 과제들을 짚어본다.
더불어 독일의 역사학자 Michael Wolffsohn을 화상연결 해 통일 이전의 동-서독 이산가족은 어떤 방식으로 교류를 해왔는지, 그리고 이것이 독일의 통일에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 들어본다.
